It was my pleasure to work out this interview with the arcane Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, after my request had a positive respond. Not just because DNS is an old time favorite for me but they are the ones who stayed loyal and true in a sense to the original root of the genre. Founder guitarist Velnias answered my questions revealed some yet unknown information about the band and their philosophy. Please feel yourselves just as fortunate as I do when you read these lines.
Greetings Velnias. Thank you for accepting my request for this interview. First of all can you tell me a little bit about the band’s formation circumstances? How did it all start and what ideology did it evolve from?
After the sun set on the glorious days of early old school black metal it was the intention of D. N. Slaughtercult to uphold the traditional vein. We felt the need to do so as the music we cherished had been betrayed by several of the very Scandinavian forefathers. Thus D. N. Slaughtercult was called into its existence during the cold wintery months of 1997.
Can you reveal the origin of the band’s name and also your artistic names? What is Slaughtercult and what does it mean to you?
The band name should not be understood as a single point of origin. It is to be seen as a trinity. Three keywords put together to form something greater. A union of three entities namely „Darkened”, „Nocturn” and „Slaughtercult”. Each term symbolizes a deeper meaning. Their nature can’t be expressed in a few words. On the other hand, wisdom is never served on a silver plate. As we’ve always propagated find your own truth by creating a definition that works best for you as an individual. Same applies to the band members names. Some are based on neologisms, some borrowed from man made mythology. Unless these names are filled with life they won’t be more than empty meaningless vessels. Speaking for solely myself, I regard D. N. Slaughtercult as a possible way to channel the very essence of a self crowned I in a positive and creative way. A channel to thrust spiritual ascendance forward. Slaughtercult is a dialect of the silver tongue, therefore it speaks to those willing to listen. It is an upheaval, a process of unearthing all that is buried by the otherwise shallow, forced upon everyday life.
How does your personal, musical and ideological perspectives changed since you are in the band, basically since the band exists?
D. N. Slaughtercult mirrors our personal and private life. We as individuals are the creator of the music. It is not the music that creates us. The prime mover has always been the individual itself. No matter how many husks you put around the core, shed them off and you shall still have the very core. Thus the very core is solidified. It doesn’t change. The fundamentals can be shaken, they may shiver and creak, yet they can’t not be shattered. This means although we’re all suspect to change as we’re underlying a cyclic process of existence, we won’t undergo drastic changes once our center has been formed. It should be the primary goal of every single human being to purify itself, to live up to its fullest capacity. In other words, to become a complete man. The higher one ascends during the refining process, the lonelier one will be.
The next question is a bit abstract so to say, but I think you’ll know what I mean. In your opinion what is the aim of the band? Does it serve a higher purpose or it is simply for the pleasure of making music?
It doesn’t really matter as long as there is a purpose. Speaking for D. N. Slaughtercult, it is not meant to be a guiding shepherd or an entertainment. What we do is executed with utmost sincerity. Justification has to be made to no one but ourselves. To some extend it is a pleasure to create music, but we’re not creating music for the sake of creating music. There is so much more to music. Music has the power to alter the state of mind. Anything that is capable of arousing our mind is literally a key to unlock spheres. That should be the intention of every single piece of art. That is the higher purpose that every artist should be enslaved to.
The band’s performances are usually extreme to its limits and this is one of the most arrant trademark of yours among many others. I heard that one of your recent gig was cancelled due to some restrictions. Would you tell me what the reason was behind the cancellation?
Fortunate enough there have been merely two concerts that we had to cancel after confirmation during all those years. The first time we refused to perform was at an open air festival. Everything we do on stage had previously been assured by contract. About an hour prior to our performance we were informed that we aren’t allowed to use blood on stage. Despite the contract the officials said „you can play, but without blood”. So we said „keep your money and fuck off, we aren’t playing”, turned around and walked off. Well, apparently there were several bands at this festival complaining about their own treatment but no one had the balls to call it off. There’s a simple rule for ourselves. We can perform live, but we don’t have to. If we perform live it is to our demands. Either you book the band as is or not at all. The second time, and probably the one you’re referring to, is similar. However our participation had been called off already weeks in advance. The reason had been the same „no blood”.
Obviously you all have an ordinary life beside the band membership. How can you separate your everyday and stage personas? Is it necessary at all in your cases?
Separation in this case is an awful term. It inclines more towards a multiple personality disorder, rather than justifying a healthy dose of sticking to privacy by simply not blatantly informing everyone about one’s life. A daily full time job adds equally to who and what we are, just like being a member of an extreme black metal band. Generalized a person is formed by experiences, no matter if they are wanted or unwanted, explicit or implicit. Whatever our mind has to deal with will be absorbed. All that we absorb has its share on our personality. Our personality is a singularity – it is the prime mover. This prime mover might have different faces, yet it is based absolutely on one true will.
It seems to me spiritualism, occultism and esoteric subjects have always had significant impact on the path of DNS. How important are these factors for the creative process of each albums and how does it affect the lyrical subjects?
The general term Occultism is an adequate and suitable word to define our roots. From an abstract point of view creativity is not more than a clandestine thought being birthed. The process of impregnation all the way to the final step of giving birth and shedding the husks is somewhat mysterious. At times it simply happens so to speak. Yet, it has been our intention to willingly bring forth these outbursts. Not by coincidence, not by force, but free of all burdensome fetters. Every outburst of creativity emanates, even if it is not more than a faint light, it is enough to be traced back to the „womb”. Exploring the source awakens the originator thus calling forth vivid and illustrious depictions. From these depictions lyrical subjects are drawn.
What are your main lyrical inspiration forces?
There is a sole inspirational force – the reflection of a self crowned I.
Your latest album titled Necrovision comprised some unusual musical and technical elements that aren’t specific for your previous releases. Can you tell me something about the concept of Necrovision?
We’re certainly not living up to the most of our own technical skills. That’s not what the music of D. N. Slaughtercult is about. On the other hand that doesn’t mean that every now and then we won’t leave our own self set boundaries. As long as the purpose and the result add to the desired intention of the song some rather unusual elements are fine. The music on Necrovision is still without a doubt D. N. Slaughtercult. There are many possible interpretations of the albums concept. The title could have been Necrocosmos instead of Necrovision, or a combination of both like Necrocosmic Vision. Each track is a piece of the whole greater. Multiverses so to speak being merged into a sole universe. They are sights, wishes, prophecies and horrors … they all come as one. It is a mirror blank ocean. The surface symbolizes the equilibrium of the fundamental law of as above so below. It reflects and therefore nourishes the two sides of everything. Starring into the abyss will solely proof that the abyss is starring back at you. Henceforth ask yourself on which side the abyss truly lies. Is the border between life and death not immediately reversible? Changing one condition to the opposite will also invert the entirety.
Are you working on any new material recently? What does the future have in store for DNS? Are you optimistic in terms of the band’s existence?
We’re in no hurry concerning new releases, however, we’re constantly writing new material. Thanks to modern technology it is no longer a problem to record ideas and arrange whole songs all by yourself. So even if the band itself takes a break for whatever reasons, new material is created in the meantime. Of course we don’t know what the future holds in store for us. We’ll handle it just like we did in all those years. One step at a time.
Have you ever wished to be successful and famous by playing with DNS or is it absolutely against your personal visions?
When we started out in 1997 we had one simple aim for the band. This aim has not changed until today. We stand for our own beliefs, we shall stay loyal to ourselves no matter what. If fame and fortune is along the road – so be it. If there is refusal – well, so be it. Whatever is released under our banner has to be 100% D. N. Slaughtercult. If 100% DNS means selling a million album copies – great, we won’t say no. If 100% DNS means selling a hundred copies – Ok, no problem. Our personal vision is expressed within the music. This vision simply exists with or without someone else opinion.
